Kirk ‘Kirkledove’ Bennett has been in and around the Jamaican music scene for more than a decade. In a career that had its start on the hotel circuit on the Jamaica’s north coast, Kirkledove has built his name as one of the ‘go to’ drummers in the Jamaican music industry by recording/touring with the likes of Tanya Stephens, Jah Cure, Bounty Killer, Marcia Griffiths, Freddie Jackson and Beres Hammond.
It was during that time Kirkledove begun crafting and composing rhythm tracks for dancehall songs with the most popular being the ‘Dutch Pat’ Riddim. Released in 2009, Dutch Pat is still recognized to this day for being riddim behind one of Mr Vegas’ most popular songs ‘Tek Weh Yuhself’.
With these types of credentials, it is only natural that we were amped to receive Kirkledove’s latest release Straight 4 to the Crown to review. Distributed by Tad’s International, Straight 4 to the Crown is an EP consisting of six tracks. While not long – listening time is around 28 minutes -, Straight 4 to the Crown certainly has some impactful pieces such as ‘Brown Bottle’, ‘Crying Freedom’ and ‘Mr. Morning’ but the entire project certainly has long standing value as a couple could gain popularity as backing tracks or even a part of a score.
