Hello Africa Chezidek Four Lighters

For most Jamaicans – young and old – whenever they hear ‘Leave the Trees’ they immediately can identify the singer behind it, Desbert Johnson more popularly known as Chezidek. A powerful song that becomes more and more relevant as people around the globe become more conscious about their collective effect on the environment as time goes by.

However, despite that song’s enduring legacy, Chezidek’s career on a whole has been surprisingly nondescript with only a handful of songs that had some form of impact such as: ‘Journey’, ‘All My Life’ and ‘Call Pon Dem’.

And while neither the recording artiste, producer nor record label could ever truly tell how any audience would receive their song/album releases, Hello Africa – officially Chezidek’s twelfth album – was expected to find success not only because its audio quality but because of its poignant subject matter. Especially at time when black people around the world are not only standing up for their rights in the countries in which they reside but are also looking towards the motherland for inspiration and guidance.

This 13-track set by and large succeeds with some of the better offerings being ‘Freedom’, ‘March’, ‘Unite’ and the title track; all in tune with the overall theme of the album. Hello Africa is definitely an album that should find traction in the usual reggae crazy circles and thus find a place on many a playlist. However, time will tell if one or a couple of these songs could follow the lead of ‘Leave the Trees’ and become a worldwide anthem.
