The Coronation of a Queen
Marcia’s impact cannot be quantified merely in chart success. It is her ability to continue to record
There are times when landmark celebrations don’t even seem real. What do you mean we have people who have tenured over 50 years in the music business? Who are still actively touring spreading the gospel that is Jamaican music. Well luckily we still have these national monuments still holding firm, standing strong and with good enough olfactory capabilities to smell the flowers that have now been placed before them, in the latter stages of their careers. As I explained in a previous article, coincidentally ten years previous, https://backayard.com/latest/marcia-griffiths-and-her-songs-of-legend/ “Marcia’s impact cannot be quantified merely in chart success. It is her ability to continue to record and most importantly remain relevant after more than 40 years in an industry which is notably male dominated that is the true triumph.” So this concert was a great way to further acknowledge and celebrate the matron of reggae music Marcia Griffiths. Joining Marcia on the stage this glorious night were Dean Fraser, Skip Marley, Stephen Marley, Damian Marley, Tanya Stephens, Busy Signal, Beenie Man, Shaggy, Beres Hammond, Buju Banton and Tarrus Riley with countless others milling about backstage, waiting for a chance to express their appreciation. Fittingly the night ended with Marcia amongst scores of fans replicating the dance steps to arguably her biggest international hit – “Electric Slide”. Always the person to always show the love she has received over the years, I truly hope that in another ten years we will be able to come together, one more, to pay tribute to a maven.
