The critically acclaimed survival game, The Last of Us, is slated to be an HBO TV-Series. Revealed in a run of tweets and press releases, Naughty Dawg also confirmed game creator, Neil Druckman and Chernobyl Writer/Director, Craig Mazio is helming the project.
This comes as welcomed news following the rescheduling of the launch of The Last of Us 2 videogame. Now anticipated to be released on the 29th of May of this year instead of the previously announced 21st of February. Fans of the franchize are expecting to see the adoption of the post-apocalyptic experience. Fresh off the heels of such video game adapted shows like The Witcher, it is easy to see where video game adaptations can go swimmingly well and why it seems like a safe bet.
Much of The Witcher’s charm is derived from it’s attention to detail and tendency NOT to deviate from the source material. A curse that has befallen the likes of Resident Evil, Street Fighter and Assassin’s Creed. Great games in their own right, just choppy translation to the silver screen in each case.
Response to the announcement was extremely favorable by fans of the game. The HBO Creative Team is well known for developing character driven shows reassuring sceptics. The Last of Us is nothing short of a tear jerker, with Druckman tweeting for International Women’s Day a list of confirmed female casted roles:
The story seems set to follow the chronology of the first game. With the plot of Ellie and Joel taking center stage. Incorporating the second game installment into the franchise seems quite likely. Druckman’s tweet had an additional redacted name that has fans guessing as to who the mystery female character could be. Some are speculating it is Dina, a girl Ellie is seen kissing from the trailer; while others are guessing it could be Anna, Ellie’s dead mother from a flashback. Whoever it is we are sure to be in for a treat.
Where does this show fit? Well some would argue that it is comparable to The Walking Dead Series. The post apocalyptic zombie show that has carved a unique niche mixing real life situations with the fantasy of zombies. The Last of Us is in a similar vein and in its own way different. One key factor being The Walking Dead playing out more like a tragic story as opposed to The Last of Us. Which one could argue is based on (renewed) hope.
Anywhere the chips fall, I’m positive viewers and gamers alike will be tuned in to see the duo that made this franchize one of the best selling games of all time. The series is presumed to drop around 2022. That is a ways off yes but wouldn’t you wait twice as long if the result was going to be twice as epic? Let us know what you think about the announcement below.
