Protoje Takes On Cali

It can never be understated the importance for an artiste to hit the road in order to cultivate, or maintain, meaningful ways to connect with their fan base.

It can never be understated the importance for an artiste to hit the road consistently in order to cultivate, or maintain, meaningful ways to connect with their fan base. Especially as the way the music business overall has reacted to the digitization of, what was once, the cash cow of record labels – the selling of physical formats – is to try and have artistes sign up for even more exploitative contracts then their predecessors had to 25 years ago. Add to the fact that the world is only a few years removed from restrictions and lockdowns brought on by coronavirus pandemic and you can see why most artistes doing their level best to try to forge, or maybe, rekindle lost bonds.

This was maybe what was in Protoje’s thoughts when he decided to mark 10 years with his band Indiggnation, alongside longtime collaborators Dubwise, with a six venue tour of the state of California – a state long known for its love for reggae music and all the things closely associated with it. We were able to gain access to his second stop at The Independent in San Francisco and capture some wonderful moments on stage.
