PROTOJE RELEASES ROYALTY FREE (SIDE B)
What a year 1981 was. Jamaica was struggling to heal its wounds from the previous years bloodiest and most volatile elections the island had ever experienced. The wounds were painfully reopened when it lost one of its most beloved sons – Robert Nesta Marley on May 11, 1981, aged just 36.
It was also the year The Reagan Administration commenced its 8 year political ‘war(fare) on drugs’ – the effects of which the Caribbean and Central America continue to the count the costs to this day.
But in the midst of all the turmoil and loss, a young general entered from some Ancient Future and settled in this earthly realm on June 14,1981 (interestingly he shares a birthday with Hugh Mundell – June 14, 1962. Remember he also covered ‘Stylin’ which is Mundell’s original track?) bringing with him his countless musical gifts. And his name? Oje OIliviere or you may know him simply as: Protoje.
Many years later, he would embark on another journey. This time it would be a US & European tour and to honour his 32nd birthday, Protoje once again collaborated with dub selector Yaadcore and on June 14, 2013 dropped the 27 track mixtape: ‘Music From My Heart’ ( a combination of tracks from his sophomore album: 8 Year Affair )
Fast forward three years later, June 14, 2016 and Protoje drops ‘Royalty Free’ – a five track mixtape released most unusually as a ‘Side b’ and with tracks numbered 6 to 10. I feel this record gives us maybe not so much an insight but a small peek into the range of genres that influence the mans’ style and flow
Tracklist
6. Can’t feel no way ( First preview before the launch. Keen ears should have picked up the sampled vocals of the Crown Prince of Reggae Mr Dennis Emmanuel Brown on this track)
8. Sandra Foster – (a reference to the former Miss Jamaica World 1991 & with a tongue in cheek reference to an ex beauty queen & current MP)
10. Used to be my life
I look forward to listening to all the tracks in detail and delving further into the grooves in the upcoming days & I’m sure you will too.
