There are certainly few concepts more furtherly opposed than the teachings of the Nyabinghi sect and the idea of Christmas. However, of all the things the power of music can do, it surely can bridge a divide. Which had to be one of primary reasons Dean Fraser decided to attempt to bring his interpretation to these series of songs – some ballads more than several centuries old – which are commonly associated with the Yuletide period. ‘When A Child Was Born’, ‘The Little Drummer Boy’, ‘Chrismus a Cum (Llamma), ‘We Three Kings’ and ‘Auld Lang Syne’ are the tracks that stood out for me but ‘Nyabinghi Christmas’ is a album that has the potential to be played every Christmas Day moving forward in households that love West Indian music as sonically it is such as easy listen.
