Remembering Ibo
Death. It is inevitable for all but not always cruel. As there are instances that a person’s death only highlights the legacy they have left behind. A former member of legendary bands Inner Circle and Third World, the latter he was also one of the founders, Ibo Cooper has a musical legacy that spanned decades – one which will surely out live us all. As that’s what good music tends to do. However, it was his years after leaving Third World, in 1997, that truly solidified the reach of his time here in this plane of existence. Ibo became a senior lecturer at Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. Imparting his technical knowledge of the music and the truths of the business of music to scores of eager students over the years until his passing. This year already was a rough one for Ibo and the Cooper family with the loss of his son Arif, in March, and his wife Joy a mere few weeks before Ibo. That being said there was nothing but love present at this staging of Reggae Wednesdays when members of the reggae music fraternity and many well wishers joined the Cooper family to send off one Jamaica’s favourite sons.
