Reggae, We Salute You!

The Rebelution continues!!!

If you have never before experienced this energy of preservation, you are truly missing out!!. Let’s start at the beginning, where this diamond in the rough began. Not with an intention to be so grand, Tony Rebel states in his speech at the launch of 25 years of this iconic show. He explains that this all started as just a birthday celebration or what we sometimes call ‘him earthstrong’, which later turned into a show that has blessed and remained in persons’ hearts for a whopping 25 years. This was not just another show, this was the celebration of sweat, tears, laughter and tremendous positive energy. It was an honour to have been a part of this experience.

Walking into the launch that was held at the Jamaica Pegasus, I really never knew what to expect, I knew that when conscious souls come together, infused with reggae music, the comfort and creativity would be at the top of the list for fashion and style. Reggae is a deep rooted tradition in Jamaica, and with that comes deep rooted fashion, style and lifestyle, so it was only normal that I had mixed feelings as to how modern style will be mixed and matched with tradition. I must admit, it wasn’t at all that bad (ha ha..), it was a cool space to be in, you could see the growth in the industry as it relates to embracing modern fashion and adding elements of various personalities to it, even if you are an old soul or embrace a fashion forward style and lifestyle.

Salute to 25 years
On January 12th and 13th, I witnessed what was one of the greatest shows originated and brewed by Reggae music, style and lifestyle. With a lineup that had you singing and dancing all night, I couldn’t help but be amazed as to the organization of this show. Merging the old and the new, the organizers of this epic show reminded me and all the patrons that despite the rain, live reggae music cannot and will never fade.
Customization is very important to personal and efficient styling. I personally believe that there are some celebrities that made sure that their sense of style was just as epic as their performances. However, this wasn’t the case for everyone. I am a firm believer that style should come from the soul, and if it is that you don’t know your sense of style, there is nothing wrong with getting help to find it, there is no shame in that.
I will highlight for you some of the Men’s fashion and style that I particularly loved and some that I thought was an okay attempt. Taking the time to focus on not only the colours that compliment you, one should always remember that the fit is also important in depicting efficient fashion and style.

We know to always expect the 3 main colours whenever we step into any reggae show. For me, it’s how you can reinvent yourself and your style with these 3 colours. Whether as accents to your outfits or as the main colour of the outfit itself. Throughout the night, I witnessed mostly comfortable style with a mix of chic for some of the acts. However, I feel that Men’s Style in Jamaica does need a bit more openness to new things. Let me explain what I mean, ones image not only encompasses the clothes that you put on your body but also the choice of colours of that particular outfit is just as important. Colours depict moods, not only for the persons wearing the outfit but also for onlookers. If it is that your aim is just to look good, this may not be accepted by your audience in the way that you feel just because of the colours you put together. Colours compliment you just as the outfit does, and this is very important to remember.
Some of the combinations I saw were on point and very pleasing to the eyes and some however, I feel needed help. Find out what colours work for you, your skin tone and also your personality. In addition, how you combine the colours can make or break your outfit. Simplicity is key, and this is especially important for Men’s Fashion, Style and Lifestyle.
