English romantic poet Lord Byron said, "Passion is the element in which we live; without it, we hardly vegetate." We prefer Mischu Laikah's version better, "I was into school, was going to be a doctor.but I just had to pursue my passion." At first glance, the Suriname, Pakistani, Caribbean-mixed (by way of St. Maarten) singer, gives you the feeling that you've known her for years, or at least reminds you of someone you've seen at the grocery store a couple times. At the first listen to her music, that familiarity becomes evident as the introductory resistance of new music passes through your system. The 24-yr old has, like most Caribbean islanders, been around music since birth and like most potentially great musicians, Mischu has always had musicians in, out and around her family. Her Suriname and St. Maarten origins bleed way for her Caribbean and World music influences such as Bob Marley and Lucky Dube. Not falling short of that influential list is Alicia Keys, Robin Thicke, Ayo and Damian Marley, compiled eclectically to reflect her own 'almost' idiosyncratic breed of music. In the ceremonial two years an artiste gets to pay his or her dues, Mischu Laikah has released singles with reggae superstar Perfect, signed with Stonerich Management and gone on tour in Budapest, Hungary. Mischu's tentative album release is for mid-2009 and her first video for her official single "Things You Do" is scheduled to debut shortly after. "[Things You Do] is a real sweet, sexy tune that a girl sings for her man," she explains softly. Filming will take place nowhere else but in the Mecca of reggae-- Kingston, Jamaica. Look out for this one, we could have a border breaker on our hands.
