PROTOJE RELEASES NEW SINGLE, ‘WRONG SIDE OF THE LAW’

KINGSTON, JAMAICA – Breakout artiste, Protoje, who has just returned to Jamaica from his performances in the United Kingdom, recently leaked his latest single on the streets. The track, titled ‘Wrong Side Of The Law,’ is expected to make the cut for his thirteen-track album, The Seven Year Itch.

As the name suggests, the song challenges the validity of Jamaica’s law books, particularly those pertaining to marijuana possession. Playing the role of storyteller, Protoje skilfully recounts a certain encounter with the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

“This one was actually inspired by a true story,” he explained. “I had just finished a late night session at the studio and was heading home when we were pulled over by the police.”

The “we” refers to himself and Dutty Bookman, co-host of the now off-air Reasoning talk show on Newstalk 93 FM that boasted the taglines “holding a medz on the airwaves” and “for the youth, by the youth.” He is currently balancing his public relations career with the pending completion of his first novel. He also co-wrote ‘Wrong Side Of The Law’ with Protoje who had nothing but praise for his counterpart, “Dutty has a unique perspective on things and his personality is definitely represented in the lyrics. I expect him to raise the bar in literature when he launches his book.”

The singer also enlisted the help of underground sensation, Janine Cunningham – also known as “Jah9” – on background vocals. The songstress with the unexpectedly powerful voice has been giving audiences around the Kingston live show circuit exactly what they have been craving since late last year.

“I met Janine a couple months ago at the Uprising studio and we’ve been working closely since then,” Protoje said. “Incidentally, the track is produced by the Uprising Band.”

A far cry from the relationship woes expressed in ‘Arguments,’ this new single displays a more rebellious side of Protoje. Meanwhile, Lorna Bennett, his attorney-at-law mother, was the person who urged him to release ‘Wrong Side Of The Law.’

“The first time she saw me perform it live she told me that I had to cut it immediately,” the 28-year-old explained. “She has a number one song under her belt – ‘Breakfast In Bed’ (1972) – so I take her advice very seriously.”
